Ryder Cup 'no fun', says Mahan

Ping golfer Hunter Mahan launched a surprising attack on the Ryder Cup yesterday, claiming that few players enjoy the biennial team competition.

The 26-year-old, who currently lies 11th in the US standings, said that the American team do not take the Ryder Cup as seriously as their European counterparts and even suggested that top players could soon refuse to take part in the event.

Speaking ahead of this week''s WGC-Bridgstone Invitational in Ohio, Mahan described the Ryder Cup as a "money-maker like no other" for the PGA and claimed that many golfers feel they are treated like "slaves" during the competition.

"From what I''ve heard, the Ryder Cup just isn''t fun. The fun is sucked right out of it," he told Golf magazine.

"At some point the players might say, ''You know what? We''re not doing this anymore, because this is ridiculous''."

Mahan turned professional in 2003 and won the Travelers Championship in 2007. He also finished tied for sixth at The Open Championship that year - his best result at a Major tournament so far.
