Donald pulls out of US PGA

Mizuno golfer Luke Donald has withdrawn from next week''s PGA Championship at Oakland Hills due to ongoing problems with his wrist.

The 30-year-old suffered the injury during the final round of the US Open in June and has not played since, suggesting that his chances of making Nick Faldo''s Ryder Cup side are beginning to fade.

Donald has represented Europe at the last two Ryder Cup competitions but captain Faldo has hinted that he would be reluctant to select an unfit player, or one who had only recently recovered from injury.

With the Englishman currently 11th in the world points standings and 43rd on the Order of Merit, his absence from Oakland Hills next week could finally kill his chances of taking on the Americans at Valhalla in September.

Faldo will use two wildcard picks to complete his 12-man team, with Taylormade''s Sergio Garcia, Cobra player Ian Poulter, Yonex''s Colin Montgomerie, Nike golfer Paul Casey and Darren Clarke all vying for a place as things stand.

Despite his inconsistent form this season, Clarke''s chances of appearing in his sixth Ryder Cup were boosted when he received an invitation for the PGA Championship. The Northern Irishman is currently 33rd in the points table.
