Vaughan triumphs in playoff at Royal Troon

Bruce Vaughan beat his fellow American John Cook on the first extra hole to seal victory at the Senior Open Championship yesterday.

With both players finishing six under par at Royal Troon, a playoff was needed to decide the winner and Vaughan clinched the title after Cook missed a 12-foot putt.

Eduardo Romero of Argentina finished one shot behind the leaders, with Bernhard Langer on four under par and Greg Norman in joint fifth alongside 2007 champion Tom Watson.

The veteran Australian, who came close to winning The Open at Royal Birkdale last week, shot a final round of 68 to finish two under par.

Norman said afterwards that he has "enjoyed every step" of his golf recently, following good performances on Merseyside and in Ayrshire.

The Great White Shark is yet to decide whether he will accept an invitation for next month''s PGA Championship at Oakland Hills, Michigan.
