Greg Norman''s Open form deserted him yesterday as he struggled to a four-over-par 75 in the first round of the Senior Open Championship.
The 53-year-old Australian, who led after three rounds at Royal Birkdale last week, said "the ball just wasn''t rolling my way" after slipping to joint-44th place on the first day at Royal Troon.
US player Bruce Vaughan and Argentina''s Eduardo Romero currently top the leaderboard, with both golfers carding rounds of three under par.
Vaughan described his round as "either feast or famine" after sinking eight birdies, a double bogey at the sixth hole and a triple bogey at the 12th.
Defending champion Tom Watson lies in joint-sixth place on one under par alongside Bernhard Langer, who also shot a 70.
Watson is targeting a record fourth Senior Open title at the Ayrshire course the site of his 1982 Open triumph.
The first day''s play at Royal Troon also included a hole-in-one at the eighth from American Craig Stadler, who won 123 bottles of wine for the shot as a sponsor''s prize.
