"Fun round" moves Villegas into contention

Camilo Villegas carded the best round of the Open Championship today to move into second place on the leaderboard.

The Cobra golfer''s excellent 65 – an 11-shot improvement on his opening day score – means he is now just one shot behind leader Greg Norman on one over par.

Villegas started off by bogeying the first two holes but went on to hit eight birdies, including five on the final five holes at Royal Birkdale.

Speaking to BBC Sport afterwards, the Colombian described his second-day performance as a "fun round", but admitted that playing conditions were still difficult due to strong wind and rain.

"It''s tough out there and very different to what I''m used to in America. We''ll see what happens over the next two days," Villegas said.

The 26-year-old also told reporters that practising with Norman earlier in the week helped him to adapt his game to the challenges of links golf.

Another solid round of 70 from the Australian veteran today means he is on level par for the championship and remains on course to clinch a third Open title at the age of 53.
