Europe''s Ryder Cup captain Nick Faldo has warned Colin Montgomerie that he will have to improve if he wants to play in September''s match at Valhalla.
The Yonex professional has become Europe''s talisman in recent Ryder Cup matches, but his disappointing form this year has left him struggling to qualify for Faldo''s team.
Padraig Harrington, Paul Casey, Darren Clarke and Ian Poulter are also unlikely to earn places in the line-up, so competition to become one of the captain''s two picks is strong.
Faldo is well aware of what Montgomerie has to offer the team, but has made it clear he does not think the Scot merits selection on current form.
"He''s been an historic Ryder Cup player but he''s the same as everybody else. You would expect a player of his ability to be able to turn it on," the captain told the Guardian.
Montgomerie is currently the third highest points scorer for Europe in Ryder Cup history, behind Faldo and Bernard Langer. |
