Norman set for Troon return

Greg Norman has confirmed he will form part of what is likely to be the strongest field ever assembled for the Senior Open Championship later this month.

Defending champion Tom Watson is the biggest name confirmed to appear at Royal Troon, where Norman will also renew his rivalry with Sandy Lyle, Bernard Langer and Ian Woosnam when the event gets underway on July 24th.

The Australian won the Open Championship in both 1986 and 1993 but perhaps unfairly, is best known for his succession of near misses in big tournaments.

One of the events that Norman feels he should have won is the 1989 Open Championship at Royal Troon, when he carded one of the most memorable rounds in the sport''s history on the final day to force his way into a playoff with Mark Calcavecchia and Wayne Grady.

However, his game fell apart at the fourth and final extra hole, as he found sand twice before blasting his ball out of bounds, handing Calcavecchia the biggest win of his career.

Norman told the European Tour''s official website: "I''m sure that the memories will come flooding back when I stand on the first tee at Royal Troon, recalling the Open Championship I could have won here."

The Great White Shark is also competing in this week''s Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, where he will play alongside Robert Karlsson and Woody Austin on the first two days.ADNFCR-1571-ID-18686531-ADNFCR
