Kelly benefits from Donald''s misfortune

Jerry Kelly will play in this week''s Open Championship following Luke Donald''s decision to withdraw.

Mizuno professional Donald has not played since suffering a wrist injury during the US Open but had been hoping to return to action at Royal Birkdale.

However, doctors have now advised the 30-year-old to rest for a further three to four weeks.

"I consider the Open to be at the top of the list of the four biggest tournaments I play each year so it is extremely disappointing to not be able to be at Royal Birkdale," said Donald.

The news also means the world number 19 is unlikely to play in this year''s Ryder Cup, as he is not currently in a qualification place and will have little time to prove his fitness before Europe''s captain Nick Faldo makes his selections on August 31st.

Donald''s misfortune is, however, good news for Kelly, who was second reserve for the Open Championship.

Pat Perez, the man above Kelly on the list, was given a place in the Major after TaylorMade golfer David Toms pulled out.ADNFCR-1571-ID-18682033-ADNFCR
