Paula Creamer set a new course record at Highland Meadows, Ohio on Thursday when she carded a 60 in the first round of the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic.
The 21-year-old managed nine birdies in the final 11 holes to finish the round 11-under.
Afterwards Creamer admitted she had not been aware of just how close she was to equalling the 59 shot by Annika Sorenstam in an LPGA Tour event seven years ago.
She said: "I didn''t know it was a par 71. I thought it was a par 72. If I would have known that, who knows?"
Any disappointment Creamer may have felt about narrowly missing out on a sub-60 round is likely to have been cushioned by the fact that she has a five-shot lead going into the second round, as she looks for her third win of the year.
South Korean duo Gloria Park and Eun-Hee Ji are tied for second, with Eva Dahllof and Young Kim both a shot further back. |
