Former Open champion Bob Charles is to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in Florida on November 10th 2008.
The New Zealander shot to fame by becoming the first left-hander to win a Major when he defeated Phil Rodgers in a playoff to claim the 1963 Open Championship title at Lytham and St Annes.
He also secured tournament victories in both Europe and the US before establishing himself as one of the leading players in seniors golf and winning the Senior Open twice.
Charles is now 72 and the World Golf Foundation has decided to pay tribute to his achievements.
Speaking in his role of ambassador for the Hall of Fame, Gary Player said Charles "thoroughly deserves" the honour
Player added: "He is a quiet and reserved man but has always been a thorough gentleman and has represented the world of golf in a most distinguished manner."
Among the top ten finishers from the 1963 Open already inducted into the Hall of Fame are Player, Jack Nicklaus, Kel Nagle and Peter Thomson. |
