Westwood to use ''cautious approach'' at Open

Ping professional Lee Westwood is confident his new approach to Major tournaments will stand him in good stead at the Open Championship later this month.

The event will be Westwood''s 43rd appearance in a Major, but he is still looking to add one of the game''s biggest trophies to his record of 27 tournament victories and four Ryder Cup successes.

He came closer than ever before when he finished third at the US Open last month, missing a putt on the final green which would have secured him a place in the playoff alongside Rocco Mediate and eventual victor Tiger Woods.

Westwood now intends to adopt his cautious Torrey Pines strategy at Royal Birkdale, instead of playing the kind of aggressive golf for which he is best known.

"I played my way into the US Open and found myself in with a chance. I''ll try to take that focus and approach into the Open and hopefully it will work," he explained.

Having decided against playing in the European Open, Westwood returns to action in this week''s Scottish Open - an event he won in 1998.ADNFCR-1571-ID-18675843-ADNFCR
