Callaway golfer Rocco Mediate will continue his bid to win a first Major at Royal Birkdale later this month after it was confirmed he has qualified for the Open Championship.
The 45-year-old was just a putt away from securing the US Open title last month when he matched Tiger Woods over four rounds and an 18-hole playoff, only to lose out to the world number one at the 91st hole.
Although his efforts to record a shock victory at Torrey Pines eventually proved unsuccessful, they effectively booked him a return to the Open Championship for the first time since 2002.
There are qualification places available to the top two players on the PGA Tour in the two months before the British Major and the $810,000 (£410,000) Mediate won at the US Open proved vital to him claiming one of those spots.
The other will not be filled, as Kenny Perry has decided not to cross the Atlantic to play in Southport.
Among the well-known players attempting to secure a berth in the Open Championship via Local Final Qualifying are Jean Van de Velde, Andrew Coltart and Sven Struver. |
