Fisher sets the pace

England''s Ross Fisher shot a career-best 63 to finish the first day of the European Open at the top of the leaderboard.

The round, which included six successive birdies, was a new course record for The London Golf Club in Kent and gave him a two-shot lead.

Fisher''s closest rivals are Northern Ireland''s Graeme McDowell and veteran South African David Frost, who both scored 65, while McDowell''s compatriot Rory McIlroy finished with a five under par 67.

Frost and McIlroy are both chasing top-five finishes in order to qualify for the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in a fortnight''s time.

Darren Clarke also needs a place in the top five to make the field for the Major but, on a quiet day for the game''s big names, he could only score 71.

TaylorMade professional Sergio Garcia ended the day tied with Clarke, while Ian Poulter and Yonex golfer Colin Montgomerie both shot 70, and Justin Rose opened his tournament with a 69.ADNFCR-1571-ID-18669556-ADNFCR
