Colin Montgomerie is almost certain to be part of Europe''s Ryder Cup team at Valhalla in September, according to former captain Bernard Gallacher.
Montgomerie is the third highest European points scorer of all time after featuring in the last eight events, but a slump in form means his place in Nick Faldo''s team has been in doubt.
However, the Yonex golfer showed signs of returning to his best when finishing as runner-up behind Pablo Larrazabal at last weekend''s French Open.
The second-place finish earned him 444,440 (£350,000) and propelled him to 13th on the European qualification points list.
Gallacher, who captained Europe to victory at Oak Hills in 1995, believes that position would be enough to earn Montgomerie a captain''s pick.
He told BBC Sport: "I think anywhere in the top 25 would get him in. It''s difficult to see him being outside 20 in the worst scenario. Nick will have a lot of young guys and we need Colin''s experience."
Lee Westwood, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Robert Karlsson occupy the top three spots on both the world and European qualification tables, but the remaining places in Faldo''s team are wide open. |
