Larrazabal holds out for surprise win in Paris

A final round of 67 gave Pablo Larrazabal a four-shot victory at the French Open yesterday.

Leading the field from the first day, the Spanish rookie finished on 15 under par in Versailles to seal his first European Tour win and earn a place at the Open Championship next month.

An impressive performance from Colin Montgomerie saw the Yonex golfer take second place on 11 under par, improving his chances of featuring in Nick Faldo''s Ryder Cup team come September.

The day belonged to Larrazabal, however, with the 25-year-old stating he played "the best golf of my life" over the four days in France.

"I really played great golf and my putter was great all week … Now I know I can play like those guys - Montgomerie and [Lee] Westwood," he said.

Larrazabal previously appeared at the French Open as a caddie for his brother Alejandro in 2003.

Ping golfer Westwood finished tied for fifth after a closing 71 left him seven under par. Titleist''s Soren Hansen took third place, with the Dane finishing one shot behind Montgomerie, while Australia''s Richard Green was fourth on eight under par.
