Goosen apologises for Woods ''faking'' comments

Taylormade golfer Retief Goosen has retracted the comments he made about Tiger Woods'' knee injury last week.

Discussing the way in which the Nike player beat Callaway''s Rocco Mediate in dramatic fashion at Torrey Pines, the South African suggested that he may have been feigning discomfort to get the crowd on his side.

With Woods'' decision to take the rest of the season off for more knee surgery seeming to immediately discredit Goosen''s claims, the 39-year-old printed an apology for the comments on his website this week.

"My comments after Tiger won the Open were intended to be tongue-in-cheek and certainly not the way they appeared in print," he said.

Goosen added that he intends to contact Woods personally and "wholeheartedly apologise" for any offence caused by his claims.

He also described the world number one''s performance at Torrey Pines as "incredible" and wished him a "speedy recovery" from the injury.

Currently ranked 35th in the world, Goosen''s last win came at the European Tour''s Qatar Masters in January 2007. He tied for 13th at the BMW International Open in Germany last week.
