Three share lead at Warwick Hills

Corey Pavin, Bo Van Pelt and Dudley Hart all shot eight-under-par first rounds to share the lead at the Buick Open yesterday.

Each player hit a 64 on the opening day at Warwick Hills in Michigan, finishing one shot ahead of Ping golfer Daniel Chopra and Briny Baird.

Pavin, the 1995 US Open champion, told reporters afterwards that he credited his impressive score to a recently-resurrected, 24-year-old putter.

"It''s a putter I got in 1984 - brand new. I used it for quite a while, probably up until about the middle of ''95," the 48-year-old Californian said.

"Then it took a break until last year. It was on the bench for over a decade."

Much of the tournament build-up had focused on Callaway golfer Rocco Mediate, but the 45-year-old could only manage a one-under-par 71 after just missing out on the US Open title last week.

Mediate admitted to feeling exhausted following countless interviews and media engagements and joked "I''m about to faint" as he handed in his scorecard.
