A first round of 67 from Ji-Young Oh saw the South Korean share the lead with American player Pat Hurst on the first day at the US Women''s Open.
Both players finished six under par one shot ahead of South Korea''s Song-Hee Kim and two in front of Louise Friberg of Sweden, Colombian amateur Maria Jose Uribe and Ji-Yai Shin, another South Korean player.
England''s Laura Davies kept herself in contention with a three-under-par first round, while world number one Lorena Ochoa could only manage a level-par 73.
"I think this course suits my game pretty well, so I''m pretty confident this week," Oh said after the first day at the Interlachen Country Club.
The 19-year-old''s round included seven birdies and she appeared to be comfortable with a course which is the longest in the tournament''s history at 6,789 yards.
It was a case of more disappointment for Michelle Wie, however, who hit a quintuple bogey at the ninth hole on her way to an eight-over-par 81.
The 18-year-old American recently returned to competition after an injury-ravaged season in 2007 but is essentially out of the tournament following a torrid first round.
