Rookie Pablo Larrazabal shot a first round of 65 to top the leaderboard on the opening day at the French Open.
The Spaniard''s six-under-par round put him one shot ahead of English youngster Oliver Fisher, who finished level with Ireland''s Peter Lawrie after both carded a 66 in Versailles.
Lawrie later described his round as a "rollercoaster ride" after beginning with a double bogey before going on to hit ten birdies in the next 14 holes.
"That''s not me usually. I''m normally calm and collected - par, par, par and the occasional birdie. Ten in a round is possibly a record for me," the 34-year-old Dubliner said.
Lawrie won the Spanish Open earlier this year and victory in this week''s tournament would make him the first player to complete the double since Bernhard Langer in 1984.
Last year''s US Open champion Angel Cabrera finished two shots off the pace on four under par, with his fellow Ping golfer Lee Westwood and Yonex''s Colin Montgomerie both on two under.
