The 2008 US Open will be decided by an 18-hole playoff today after Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate both finished one under par at Torrey Pines.
A birdie at the final hole saw Nike golfer Woods, who led by one shot going into the last day in California, keep his hopes of winning a 14th Major title alive.
Callaway golfer Mediate started the day two shots behind but carded an even-par 71 before Ping''s Lee Westwood missed a putt on the 18th to drop back into third place, leaving Woods and Mediate level at the top of the leaderboard.
The 45-year-old Pittsburgh player, who has five PGA Tour titles to his name but has never won a Major, said that facing world number one Woods in a playoff would be "a battle royale".
"How many opportunities does anyone have to go up against the best player on the planet in the US Open?" he added.
Titleist golfer Robert Karlsson and Nike''s DJ Trahan finished tied for fifth on two over par, with Srixon player Miguel Angel Jimenez one shot behind.
Callaway''s Phil Mickelson could only manage a six-over-par finish after hitting a 76 on Saturday.
