Taylormade golfer Justin Rose and Mizuno player Luke Donald carded opening rounds of 68 to sit three shots off the lead on the first day at Muirfield Village.
The English pair are in a group of five players on four under par at the Memorial Tournament, with Australian Matthew Goggin heading the field with a seven-under first round, while US players Kenny Perry and Jerry Kelly are both one shot off the lead.
Donald finished third at the PGA Championship last week, but Rose has struggled for form recently and was pleased to begin the Ohio tournament with a good score.
He said: "It was probably one of the most enjoyable rounds I''ve had this year.
"It was nice I got a little bit of reward today from some hard work I put in over the last couple of weeks."
Rose''s round included four birdies and an eagle at the 12th hole, although he double bogeyed the 14th.
Sergio Garcia, who recently replaced Rose as Europe''s top-ranked player, could only manage level par in his first round the same score as world number two Phil Mickelson.
