Nicklaus reflects on different age of golf

Jack Nicklaus used his press conference at Muirfield Village this week as an opportunity to reflect on how the game of professional golf has changed over the years.

The 68-year-old host of the Memorial Tournament described how the presence of coaches, agents and sports psychologists at PGA Tour events can seem strange to a player of his generation.

Nicklaus lamented the impersonal aspect of the modern game, with the use of agents and managers meaning that golfers rarely deal directly with other players and tournament organisers.

"Guys just don''t communicate anymore," the Golden Bear said.

"Every once in a while I might get something, but I don''t think I ever had a note from anybody when they''re going to leave the Memorial Tournament or not going to play," he added.

Nevertheless, Nicklaus said that golf remains in good health overall, with a group of top players who "love playing the game".

The Ohio-born player won a record 18 Major titles during his career, with his final win coming at the Masters in 1986.
