Irish Open should be in NI, says Harrington

Wilson golfer Padraig Harrington has suggested that the Irish Open organisers consider moving the tournament to Northern Ireland in the future.

The defending champion will take part in the event at Adare Manor this week but said that relocation could improve the tournament''s status, which is seen to have slumped in recent years.

Harrington told BBC Sport that Royal Portrush Golf Club would be an "ideal" venue for future Irish Open events, although that is not the only course in Northern Ireland capable of hosting the tournament.

"If I was running the event, it would be up north - definitely. It would be a tremendous event," the 36-year-old Dubliner said.

"There is a great golfing public up there," he added.

County Antrim''s Royal Portrush provided the venue when Ireland hosted the Open Championship for the first time in 1951.
