Clarke targets Irish Open victory

Darren Clarke feels he is in with a good chance of following up his recent win at the Asian Open with victory at Adare Manor this week.

The Ulsterman heads to the Irish Open in confident mood after clinching his first European Tour title in five years at the Shanghai event – a win which signalled the end of a difficult period for the 2006 Ryder Cup hero.

Clarke told BBC Sport this week that he was always confident his "hard work" would eventually pay off and see him recapture past form.

"There''s no reason why I can''t keep on improving and starting winning more tournaments again," the 39-year-old said.

"I think my swing is probably better than it''s ever been before technically," he added.

Clarke also revealed this week that he will play at the Wales Open later this month but does not intend to take part in the US Open qualifier at Walton Heath.

He told reporters he wants to concentrate on European Tour events in order to boost his ranking for the Ryder Cup in September.
