David Duval has said that he is still capable of playing the kind of golf that once saw him reach the top of the world rankings.
The 2001 Open champion is taking part in the AT&T Classic in Atlanta this week as he continues his bid to rediscover past form and again become one of the golf world''s most feared opponents.
Since winning his only Major title, the Florida-born player suffered an alarming slide in form exacerbated by injury problems and personal difficulties.
Duval played in just seven tournaments last year because his wife was going through a difficult pregnancy, but has not lost belief in his ability to compete at the top of the professional game, the Associated Press reports.
"I''m a lot closer to playing great golf than my scores indicate," the 36-year-old said this week - he has played at eight events so far this season but has yet to make a cut.
"When I''m swinging well, nobody hits the golf ball any better than I do."
Duval has 13 PGA Tour wins to his name and finished as runner-up at the Masters in 1998.
