Sorenstam to end playing career

Swedish golfer Annika Sorenstam has announced her retirement from the game "after much consideration".

The world number two cited "other priorities" in her life, such as starting a family and focusing on her business interests, as the reasons for her decision.

Over the course of her career, the player has registered 88 victories, including 72 LPGA tournament wins and ten major titles.

She also became the first female golfer in nearly 60 years to play on the men''s US tour.

Commenting ahead of this week''s Sybase Classic in New Jersey, Sorenstam said: "I am very proud of what I have accomplished as a professional golfer, and while I will no longer be playing competitively, I will continue to be very involved and engaged in the game of golf."

According to LPGA.com, the player has accrued $1,244,281.00 (£638,900) during the season so far. However, Sorrenstam is currently behind all-conquering Mexican Lorena Ochoa in the rankings.
