Mobile phones ''most annoying'' for golfers

The use of mobile phones has been rated number one in a new list of golf course irritants.

According to the New York Times, people talking on mobiles is "the unquestioned scourge of the golf course" and the factor most likely to spoil a decent game.

Other annoyances in the top ten include people who take too many practice swings, players who boast about their equipment and those who make excuses after hitting a poor shot.

Giving some advice to people prone to using their phones at the fairway, the newspaper states: "Turn them off and if you must check into the digital world, be discreet and tactful.

"Turning your back to the green as you talk doesn''t qualify."

Cheating by moving balls into a better position and players who "anoint themselves the golf instructor of the group" are also rated a major irritants.

According to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, players looking to improve their health should opt to walk the course rather than use a golf cart.
