Otto secures debut win in Italy

Hennie Otto finished one shot ahead of English player Oliver Wilson to clinch his first European Tour win at the Italian Open yesterday.

The South African took a five-shot lead into the final day in Milan but almost let it slip as Wilson shot an inspired round of 64.

However, Otto held his nerve to hole some excellent putts and finish 25 under par, one shot adrift of the tournament record set by Percy Alliss in 1935.

"It''s great to win. I have been working very hard on my putting and I don''t think I''ve ever holed more long putts than I did this week," the 31-year-old said following his victory.

Robert Karlsson, who had looked likely to win the title after hitting a course record round of 61 on Friday, finished two shots off the lead to take third place, while Philip Archer and Marcel Siem were tied for fourth.

Wilson has now finished as runner-up at three tournaments this season. The Mansfield-born golfer is yet to win a title on the European Tour – he was beaten by Paul Casey in a playoff at the China Open in 2006.
