Garcia wins playoff to clinch title at Sawgrass

Sergio Garcia beat Paul Goydos in a playoff to win the Players Championship in Florida yesterday.

The Taylormade golfer hit a final round of 71 to finish five under par at Sawgrass, setting up a tense playoff with Goydos on the course''s famous 17th hole.

Garcia managed to make par with an excellent tee shot, securing his first PGA Tour title in three years after his American opponent hit a double bogey.

"It''s just a lot of hard work that is starting to pay off," the Spaniard said.

He also alluded humorously to the absence of the world number one at Sawgrass, stating: "I want to thank Tiger Woods for not being here. That always makes things a little bit easier."

Garcia''s victory was the first for a European golfer at the Players since Sandy Lyle won the title in 1987.

The British contingent again struggled to make an impact, however, with Cobra golfer Ian Poulter finishing highest out of the UK players on four over par.
