Last year''s Players Championship runner up Sergio Garcia carded a six-under-par 66 on the opening day of the 2008 event yesterday to take the lead in the Florida sun.
The Spaniard, who is sponsored by Taylormade, is looking to become only the second European to win the tournament after Sandy Lyle''s win in 1987.
Phil Mickelson, who was victorious in this competition last year, is currently two-under par and makes up part of the chasing pack. Commenting on the Sawgrass course, he suggested that patience is a key if success is going to be achieved.
"This is a course where you really want to be patient and not try to force birdies but try to take advantage of the birdie holes and the par-fives especially," the Callaway golfer said.
"I think that if you make a lot of pars out here, you''re not going to be losing much ground."
No-one will be getting a particularly low score and run away with the lead, he added.
The action continues until Sunday May 11th, as some of the world''s greatest golfers aim for their share of the $9.5 million (£4.87 million) purse.
