"Destiny at work" for Clarke

Darren Clarke has suggested that an unforeseen force was involved in his win at the Asian Open last month and could help his bid to appear in the Ryder Cup this September.

The Northern Irishman, whose triumph in Shanghai was his first victory on the European Tour in over five years, told the Guardian that getting back to winning ways after the death of his wife Heather in 2006 was like emerging from a "black hole".

Describing the 40-foot putt which clinched an emotional victory at the Asian event, Clarke hinted that he feels he was fated to win the tournament after a difficult period in which he has struggled to raise his two young sons while dealing with tabloid intrusions into his personal life and a loss of form on the golf course.

He said: "There might be a bit of skill involved but, in moments like that, there''s destiny at work.

"That''s what it felt like - it was my turn to win again after so long on the rack."

Clarke is currently ranked 22nd in the European Ryder Cup list and 113th in the world rankings.
