Gary Clark scored a first round of 67 to move into fourth place after the first round of the Spanish Open yesterday.
The Englishman outshone high-profile UK players such as Colin Montgomerie and Darren Clarke by hitting eight birdies in his opening round to sit two shots off the lead in Seville.
Swedish player Martin Erlandsson tops the leaderboard with a seven-under-par 65, while Yonex golfer Montgomerie hit a 70 during his first round of competitive golf in five weeks.
Recent Asian Open champion Clarke is seven shots adrift of the lead and admitted that he was feeling fatigued after last week''s triumph in Shanghai.
"Mentally, I was not at the races. The game''s fine, but my head''s tired - I made some poor decisions," the Northern Irishman said.
Erlandsson''s inspired opening round featured several superb putts, including one 40-footer and another shot from 25 feet.
