Torrey Pines "hardest course in the world"

Phil Mickelson has claimed that the world''s top golfers will face the toughest challenge of the season when they head to the US Open next month.

According to the Callaway golfer, the course at California''s Torrey Pines is currently the most difficult in the world and is likely to give many players a tough time when the second Major of the season begins on June 12th.

The world number two, who has won three Majors but is yet to triumph at the US Open, said that he played the course recently and predicted that an over-par score should be enough to win at next month''s tournament.

"Even if it''s soft, I don''t think anything close to even-par will win. I think it''s the hardest course in the world," Mickelson stated.

He added that the rough in certain areas of the course was particularly unforgiving.

Mickelson is currently in joint second place at the Wachovia Championship after hitting a four-under-par first round of 68. The US player is one shot behind his compatriot David Toms.
