Although the Players Championship is frequently referred to as golf''s "fifth Major", many golfers have different ideas about which competition truly deserves to rank alongside the sport''s four big events.
With the largest purse in professional golf and the spectacular "island green" at TPC Sawgrass'' 17th hole, the Players remains a popular choice for the title of fifth Major among many members of the Tour, Golfdigest.com reports.
"If I could put any trophy on my mantel, it would be the Players and I''m sure there are plenty of guys who feel the same way," Taylormade golfer Sean O''Hair told the website.
There are also plenty of people who would beg to differ, however, with fellow Taylormade player Scott Verplank famously referring to the Bryon Nelson Championship as "my fifth Major" when he claimed an emotional victory at the tournament in 2007.
Questions of nationality also bring an interesting twist to the debate, with several Australians such as Cobra player Geoff Ogilvy and Titleist''s Adam Scott indicating that the Australian Open represents the fifth Major in their eyes.
This year''s Players Championship begins on Thursday May 8th at Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida.
