Golf to return as Olympic sport?

Golf should be reinstated on the Olympic programme by 2016, the head of the PGA Tour has claimed.

Tim Finchem said that "the time is now right to move forward" with plans to include golf as an Olympic sport - it previously featured at the games in 1900 and 1904.

Although several top golfers have claimed that the move would make the Tour schedule too hectic and called for the world''s best amateurs to play golf at the Olympics, Finchem believes that the development could provide exciting new opportunities for professionals.

He explained: "Adding golf to the Olympics would provide another dimension to our competitive landscape.

"It would provide another, complementary opportunity for our players to compete and demonstrate their skills on a global stage."

US golfer Charles Sands won a gold medal in the golf event at the 1900 Olympics in Paris, while Canadian George Lyon clinched the individual title in St Louis four years later.
