Immelman clinches green jacket

Trevor Immelman won the 2008 Masters title yesterday to record his first victory in a Major tournament.

The Nike player, who led the field at Augusta since Thursday''s opening round, survived a double bogey on the 16th hole to finish on eight under par with a final round score of 75.

Immelman''s confident driving and assured short game meant that Tiger Woods could only manage second place, shooting a final round of 72 to enter the clubhouse on five under par.

Stewart Cink and Brandt Snedeker were tied for third place, both finishing four shots behind the leader.

Commenting on his victory, Immelman said: "It was just so tough - there was a disaster around every corner as I showed on 16, but I just hung in there."

The South African''s previous best showing at Augusta was a joint-fifth place finish in 2005. He has since undergone surgery to remove a tumour which cut short his 2007 season and caused him to miss the first eight weeks of this year''s Tour.
