Woods starts bid for Grand Slam at Augusta

Tiger Woods is hoping to use victory at the Masters as a springboard for wins in the other three Major tournaments later this year.

The Nike golfer told a news conference on Tuesday that a history-making Major Grand Slam could be within his grasp if he plays well at Augusta this week.

No player has ever won all four Majors in one season before, although Woods himself came close when he claimed victories at The Open, US Open and US PGA Championship in 2000 and won the Masters the following year.

"I think this is my 12th or 13th season and in nine of those years I''ve won five or more tournaments, so [I''ve] just got to win the right four," the world number one said.

He also acknowledged the competitiveness of this year''s Masters field, stating that "most of the top guys are playing well this year".

Among the players attempting to stop Woods'' bid for a fifth Masters title this week will be world number two Phil Mickelson, WGC-CA Championship winner Geoff Ogilvy and 2007 champion Zach Johnson.
