Merseyside cab drivers to get "golf-savvy"

Taxi drivers in Liverpool will receive free golf tuition from a local club in the build-up to this year''s Open Championship, it has emerged.

Merseyside golf resort Formby Hall has unveiled a scheme to offer free "golf workshops" for the area''s cabbies before the Open begins at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport in July.

Head of golf at Formby Hall Matthew Allen-Chilman explained that the initiative is designed to both make golf more accessible to everyone in the Merseyside area and help taxi drivers provide an informed service for the thousands of spectators who will arrive in Liverpool to attend the tournament.

He said: "We want to make sure that the game is accessible to everyone - not just the professionals and golf stalwarts.

"We all know that the city''s cabbies are amongst some of the most friendly in the UK and with some extra help we''re going to make them the most golf-savvy too."

The Open will take place at Royal Birkdale this year for the first time since 1998. Last year''s tournament was held at Carnoustie and won by Wilson golfer Padraig Harrington.
