British amateur causes stir in Spain

A blistering performance from Danny Willett almost overshadowed defending champion Lee Westwood''s accomplished showing at the Andalucia Open yesterday (March 27th).

Willett is ranked as the number one amateur in the world but was relatively unknown on the professional circuit until yesterday, when he made his European Tour debut in striking fashion, the Guardian reports.

The Sheffield youngster carded an impressive 66 in his first round at the Aloha Golf Club, finishing six under par and just one shot off Westwood''s lead in joint second place. Willett''s fearless first round included two eagles in the opening seven holes.

Speaking about the possibility of soon turning professional, the 20-year-old commented: "You can''t think about it on the course but it''s in the back of my head.

"I''d be stupid not to turn pro straight away."

Gonzalo Fernandez-Castalo, one of the promoters of the Andalucia Open, has described the course at Aloha in Marbella as a "mythical golf course" which "needs a lot of strategy" from players if they are to succeed.
