Westwood in strong position at Aloha

Lee Westwood looked well on the way to defending his Andalucia Open title after an impressive first round in Spain yesterday (March 27th).

Ping golfer Westwood finished seven under par with a score of 65 at the Aloha Golf Club, leading by one stroke from Norwegian Jan-Are Larsen and young British amateur Danny Willett, who was making his debut on the European Tour.

Commenting on his first round performance, Westwood told BBC Sport that he was able to play with "freedom" and "a lot of confidence" on the course where he claimed his 17th European Tour victory last year.

He added: "I used a similar game-plan to last year but my game is always a work in progress.

"I''ve got a few things I''m working on, with one eye on the Masters."

Meanwhile, Jose Maria Olazabal made an encouraging return to tournament golf after injury cut short his season in 2007. The Macgregor golfer and two-time Masters champion finished on one under par with 71.

The Spaniard feared that he would never play golf again after rheumatism problems left him with a "total lack of mobility" last year, he revealed earlier this week.
