Ian Poulter was forced to use his wedge as a putter during his third round at Doral last week after an accidental knock rendered the appropriate club unavailable.
While many people speculated about the Cobra golfer''s unusual choice of club for the final four holes, it later emerged that Poulter was unable to use his putter because a weight on the Odyssey club became dislodged when it struck a concrete path.
Tournament officials ruled that the slight alteration meant that the club had become non-conforming and the British player was forced to find a makeshift putter in his bag.
Ironically, Poulter then made his longest putt of the week with the wedge to save par on the 18th hole, Golfbrief.com reports.
"It''s quite funny when you stand there and you''ve got an 18-footer and you haven''t really holed an 18-footer all week with your putter, and you get to roll one straight in the middle," the 32-year-old said.
Poulter is known as something of an eccentric on the professional tour and once caused controversy by wearing an Arsenal football shirt during a tournament.
