Dyson Blows the Field Away
6 October 2009
In a rare Tuesday finish it was Simon Dyson who managed to keep a cool head and secure his second European Tour title of the year. Simon flew out of the block on the final day, where all golfers played the same course for the first time in the week, birdying 6 or the first 7 holes to open up what turned out to be an unassailable lead at the Home of Golf.
This victory also made some serious changes to Simon’s vital statistics (as well as his bank balance - a mere £485,850 for first place). It took him to the top of the European Ryder Cup standings, into the top-10 in The Race to Dubai and into the top-50 of the World Rankings for the first time in his career.
The course record 63 that secured his opening win of his season was in his mind the best of his career - but after his final round at St Andrews - his opinion soon changed.
“This is like our 5th Major, a massive tournament at the Home of Golf and I’ve shot 66 to win it!”
While it was an Englishman who took the spoils in the main event it was an unusual Irish/Danish partnership that took the team event by the throat on the final day. Their magnificent 59 on the final day helped them to the title and set a new record score of 44 under par for the team event.

Wind Blows finish to Monday
5 October 2009
The schedule for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship was blown off course this weekend by strong winds on Saturday. No play was possible on Saturday after gusts of over 50mph ripped along the east of coast of Scotland - meaning play would slip to a Monday finish. The impromptu ‘half-time’ break certainly helped the professionals who came out on Sunday and helped themselves to a feast of birdies and eagles.
It is Englishman Luke Donald who tops the leader board after carding a 64 at Kings Barnes on Sunday - a round that included 9 birdies. Hot on his heels though are the Northern Irish trio of Darren Clarke, Michael Hoey and Rory McIlory who was playing with his dad in the Pro Am part of the event.
As we enter the final day there are only 5 stokes separating the top-15 so it is sure to be a close finish. And when you add the unpredictability of the weather into the equation then any one from up to 7 or even 8 shot back might fancy their chances of things go their way.
