HOW DO I OVERCOME FIRST TEE NERVES?
This is the question I get asked the
most when I am coaching or giving seminars. The answer lies within how
confident you feel about yourself as you step up to that first tee.
In my coaching I have more time to help golfers achieve a long term approach to
being confident on the golf course; training your mind to be consistently
positive takes as much practise as a good golf swing.
Here are a few quick tips, however, to help you make a more positive and
confident start to your game.
-
Your sub-conscious believes everything you tell it; positive or negative, so
get into the habit of thinking only positive thoughts from the moment you wake
up. Make a list of all the good things you enjoy about golf; the social side,
playing well, the exercise and concentrate on only positive thoughts.
-
Give yourself plenty of time to get ready and leave well ahead of your tee time
so you arrive relaxed and NOT stressed before you even start. Make a CD
compilation of all those tracks that put you in a positive mood and play them
on the way.
-
Warm up when you get there, but do not try to prove to yourself that you are
playing well, if you end up having a bad practise session you will take that
negativity onto the course with you.
-
The most important thing to remember is – ‘the you you see, is the you you’ll
be’ – so see yourself as a WINNER. Although this will not guarantee you a win,
as other factors come into play, it will help. I can guarantee though, if you
do decide that you are going to play badly – YOU WILL!
Finally, remember everyone is feeling exactly the same as you and by getting
down on yourself you will not improve the outcome; if anything you will create
the opposite. It is up to you to CHOOSE to go out on that first tee feeling
positive and above all else to HAVE FUN!
