Stuart Appleby

Residence: Orlando, Florida

DOB: 05/01/1971

Stuart was brought up on a dairy farm in rural northern Australia and began playing golf by hitting golf balls from paddock to paddock once his chores were completed. By aged 18 he was playing junior golf for Victoria State and turned professional in 1992 - starting on the PGA Tour of Australasia. In 1995 he qualified for the US PGA Tour and in 1997 he posted his first victory at the Honda Classic. Tragedy struck in 1998 when Appleby's wife was knocked down and killed in a freak accident outside a train station in London as the couple prepared to catch the Eurostar train to Paris They’d planned a short vacation before Stuart played in the Scandinavian Masters in Sweden the following week. He somehow bounced back to win the 1998 Kemper Open. Stuart currently sits just outside the top-10 on the carer prize money list having amassed almost $25million during his 12 years on the PGA Tour. He has won a total of 8 tournaments on the PGA Tour - 2 of them in 2006 - the Mercedes Championships and the Shell Houston Open which saw him finish the year 8th on the money list, a career high finish. Our biog photo of Appleby was taken at the World Golf Championships at Doral in March 2007. 2008 started superbly for Stuart, finishing in the top-10 of each event that he played in until the end of April. His best win of the season came later on in the schedule when he finished in a tie for 2nd at the World Golf Championship - Bridgestone Invitational. He is currently sitting inside the top-25 on the PGA Money List with almost $2½million in prize money this year alone.

2009 World Golf Championship - CA Championship

12-15 March 2009 - Doral Golf and Spa Resort - Phil Mickelson won his first World Golf Championships title on Sunday at the CA Championship, where he held off Nick Watney to take the title by one stroke and his 36th career victory. However this was perhaps not the most news worthy story of the week. During his opening round, Henrik Stenson thought it a good idea to play from out of the water! After stripping down to his boxer shorts the Swede preceded to do just this. And it was down to PGA Tour photographer Kyle Auclair to capture this magical moment. With the world’s best golf photographers trailing Tiger Woods, Kyle decided he was going to follow other players instead. Little did he know this particular sequence of images would be plastered on newspapers, websites and television shows all over the country the next day.

In Stuart Appleby's bag...Stuart started the week with great promise. Opening rounds of 71, 71 and 69 saw him inside the top-30 and ready to strike over the closing round to secure a top-10 finish if not better. However things went wrong in the final round and 78 saw Stuart fall from his 30th position overnight down into a tie of 61st place. Stuart has Callaway’s new premium driver in his bag - the Callaway FT-9. His irons are also a premium offering from Callaway - the X Prototype model that are also being played by Ernie Els at this moment in time. He is using Callaway X-Tour wedges and an Odyssey Tour Milled 2 putter.

2008 Australian Masters

27-30 November 2008 - Sportsbet Australian Masters - Huntingdale GC. Rod Pampling won the Sportsbet Australian Masters after edging out Marcus Fraser at the third play-off hole. The two Australians finished locked at the top of the final round leader board on 12 under par. Fraser carded a brilliant final round seven under par 65, which included just one bogey, while Pampling signed for a fourth round 65 despite having birdie chances at closing 3 holes of his round which would have sealed the win. A the 3rd play-off hole, Pampling put the pressure on his opponent after getting to within a foot, but Fraser secured the win after converting from ten feet.

In Stuart Appleby's bag...Opening rounds of 74 were not good enough for the home favourite to make the cut.

Again not our best photo but despite this we have been able to identify the following. Stuart's irons were from Callaway and were their Tour Authentic X Muscle Prototype. He complimented these with a set of Callaway X-Tour wedges.

2007 World Golf Championship - CA Championship

22-25 March - WGC - CA Championship - Doral Golf Resort and Spa - Blue Monster Course. Tiger Woods bagged another $1.35m for his two-shot win over Ryder Cup team mate Brett Wetterich at the Blue Monster Course at the Doral Resort in Miami, Florida between 22nd-25th March 2007. No one ever got closer than three shots to Tiger on the final afternoon. The World Golf Championships are played over five continents – and feature the top 50 players from the Official World Golf Rankings along with top finishers on the money lists of six Tours comprising the International Federation of PGA Tours (PGA TOUR, European Tour, Australasian Tour, Japan Golf Tour, Asian Tour and Southern Africa Tour). The formats vary - match play, strokeplay and team - but the purses are always big! The WGC CA Championship is the fifth tournament Woods has won at least three times in a row.

In Stuart Appleby's bag...In Appleby's bag at Doral are clubs we don't see much of in the UK - Bridgestones; He used J33B irons (his initials clearly stamped on the backs) which we know are fitted with Royal Precision Project X 7.0 shafts.
