Stephen Dodd
Residence: Barry, Wales
DOB: 16/07/1966
There are strong parallels between the careers of Stephen Dodd and US Tour player Bart Bryant, in that both of them toiled away for years without troubling the scorers much – before suddenly coming very good late on. In Stephen Dodd’s case that success came in 2005 when he won two European tour events at the age of 38. His golfing career however started by searching for golf balls as an 11 year old at Brynhill Golf Club in Wales. Stephen is a fan of Nottingham Forest fan, but not of flying.
Dodd had a great amateur career, playing in the Walker Cup and winning The Amateur Championship at Royal Birkdale in 1989, but spent the new few years on the second-tier Challenge Tour. He eventually made it to the main European Tour in 1995, but hovered towards the bottom until the 2005 season when he won the Volvo China Open and then in May the Nissan Irish Open – victories which took him to 17th on the Order of Merit. In 2006 he capitalized on his success to win the Smurfit European Open.
Stephen was 17th on the Order of Merit just 3 years ago in 2005. How things can change. In 2008 he finished the season in 245th place. Making only 4 cuts all year Stephens best finish was a tie for 43rd at the Methorios Capital Italian Open. Breaking 70 only 3 times all year is not the way to succeed on the now very competitive European Tour.

Stephen Dodd Tournament History
2008 Irish Open |
24-27 January - Buick Invitational - Torrey Pines. Tiger Woods joined elite company on the final day of the Buick Invitational, even though he might as well have been playing alone. He thrilled the 4-deep gallery with an improbable flop shot from the trampled grass behind the 9th green to save par. He sent Torrey Pines into delirium with a 60-foot birdie putt that started in one direction and slid into the cup from the other. He made 3 straight bogeys on the back 9, a rarity for him when he's in the lead. And none of it mattered. The outcome was never in doubt at the Buick Invitational, only the final score. A 10-foot birdie on the 18th gave Woods a 1-under 71 and an 8-shot victory, the ninth time in his career that he has won by at least that many. |

2007 BMW PGA Championship |
24-27 May - BMW PGA Championship - West Course at Wentworth. The BMW PGA Championship was played out on a rain-lashed West Course at Wentworth in Surrey. Traditionally, the PGA attracts one of the strongest fields on the European Tour and this time was no exception with Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Michael Campbell and others all making the trip across the pond. It was not, however, one of the better known superstars who walked off with the trophy and 725,000 Euro first prize, but Anders Hansen from Denmark who holed a 25 foot birdie putt on the first sudden-death play-off hole against England’s Justin Rose. This was only Hansen’s second victory on Tour – bizarrely the only other win was the same tournament – then called the Volvo PGA – five years earlier in 2002. |
