Louis Oosthuizen

Louis Oosthuizen

Residence: Mossel Bay, South Africa

DOB: 19/10/1982

One of a group of up and coming young talents to emerge from South Africa recently, and a member of the Ernie Els Foundation, receiving support and inspiration from the great man himself, Lodewicus Theodorus ‘Louis’ Oosthuizen was a member of the South African team that won the World Amateur Team Championships in 2000. Louis comes from a strong tennis family with his father and brother both playing tennis at a provincial level but opted for golf. Our photo of Louis was taken at the World Golf Championships at Doral in Florida, March 2007, where tying 50th added $45,000 to the young man’s coffers. He won several amateur tournaments in his homeland before turning professional in 2002 and has won three professional tournaments on the South African Sunshine Tour including the 2007 Dimension Data Pro-Am, Platinum Classic and Telkom PGA Championship. 2008 was a career year for Louis. Still without that elusive maiden win on the European Tour he recorded his best Order of Merit finish of 62nd. The highlights of the year were 3rd place finishes at the South African Airways Open and Dubai Desert Classic. He ended the season in good form also. A tied for 7th finish at his penultimate event was not quite enough however to secure a place at the season ending Volvo Masters.

2009 World Golf Championship - CA Championship

12-15 March 2009 - Doral Golf and Spa Resort - Phil Mickelson won his first World Golf Championships title on Sunday at the CA Championship, where he held off Nick Watney to take the title by one stroke and his 36th career victory. However this was perhaps not the most news worthy story of the week. During his opening round, Henrik Stenson thought it a good idea to play from out of the water! After stripping down to his boxer shorts the Swede preceded to do just this. And it was down to PGA Tour photographer Kyle Auclair to capture this magical moment. With the world’s best golf photographers trailing Tiger Woods, Kyle decided he was going to follow other players instead. Little did he know this particular sequence of images would be plastered on newspapers, websites and television shows all over the country the next day.

In Louis Oosthuizen's bag...After four top-10 finishes in a row - a streak that included back-to-back second places - Louis would not have been criticised for expecting a good week at the WGC CA Championship. Opening rounds of 67 and 69 put Louis into contention going into the final 2 rounds. However a third round of 73 put pay to any dreams of winning and it was only a final round of 70 that saved Louis from falling out of the TOP-20. This is a cracking photo of Louis - sadly not of his bag. All that we can determine is that he was carrying a family of Ping Rapture V2 woods (driver, fairway and hybrid).

2008 Irish Open

24-27 January - Buick Invitational - Torrey Pines. Tiger Woods joined elite company on the final day of the Buick Invitational, even though he might as well have been playing alone. He thrilled the 4-deep gallery with an improbable flop shot from the trampled grass behind the 9th green to save par. He sent Torrey Pines into delirium with a 60-foot birdie putt that started in one direction and slid into the cup from the other. He made 3 straight bogeys on the back 9, a rarity for him when he's in the lead. And none of it mattered. The outcome was never in doubt at the Buick Invitational, only the final score. A 10-foot birdie on the 18th gave Woods a 1-under 71 and an 8-shot victory, the ninth time in his career that he has won by at least that many.

2006 World Golf Championship - American Express Championship

28 September-1 October - American Express WGC - The Grove. From the Ryder Cup matches at the K Club in Ireland, many of the world’s best players headed across the Irish Sea to The Grove in Hertfordshire for the UK leg of the World Golf Championships. With an incredible 23 under par total, Tiger Woods demolished the field to take an astonishing 12th win out of 22 WGC events. Tiger left runners-up Ian Poulter and Adam Scott a very distant eight shots behind. The World Golf Championships are played over five continents – and feature the top 50 players from the Official World Golf Rankings along with top finishers on the money lists of six Tours comprising the International Federation of PGA Tours (PGA TOUR, European Tour, Australasian Tour, Japan Golf Tour, Asian Tour and Southern Africa Tour). The formats vary - match play, strokeplay and team - but the purses are always big. On this occasion, Tiger walked away (or rather flew away in his private jet) with over 1 million Euros. Hardly worth turning up was it?!
