Henrik Stenson

Henrik Stenson

Residence: Dubai, UAE

DOB: 05/04/1976

Having finished top of the Ryder Cup world points list in 2006, Henrik Stenson is perhaps most famous for holing the winning put in his Ryder Cup singles match against Vaughan Taylor - and thereby clinching a third consecutive victory for the European Team. Born in Gothenburg in 1976, he turned professional at the age of 22, then playing off a staggering +4, he joined the main European Tour in 2001 after topping the Challenger Tour Order of Merit in 1999. In 2005 Henrik finished eighth on the European Order of Merit, moving up to sixth a year later and consistently finishing in the top 10 since 2005. He is now considered to be one of the best golfers in the world after a brace of high profile wins in February 2007. He started with a win in the Dubai Desert Classic (now his home country), and then went on to win the Accenture Matchplay Championship at Dove Mountain in Arizona. These victories saw Henrik climbing the Official Golf World Rankings to 5th place surpassing Jesper Parnevik as the highest ever ranked Swedish player. Henrik now lives in Dubai with wife his Emma, who he met on a golf course in Sweden, and daughter Lisa. He is coached by Pete Cowen who has also coached Lee Westwood, Darren Clarke, Thomas Bjorn and our old friend Ian Woosnam. At the 2008 Ryder Cup while preparing to tee off in the Friday Foursomes, the announcer cracked under the immense pressure and stumbled over Henrik’s name. First calling him “Henrik Stevenson”, then “Henrik Stevens” and finally nailed it on the third time of asking, to the amusement of everyone. Henrik has had a fine 2008. After finally getting his allergies in check, the Swede finish in the top-10 9 times, including a share of 3rd at The Open Championship and a share of 4th at the year’s final major, The PGA Championship. He also made the European Ryder Cup team for the second successive time where he secured 1 ½ points. Winning over a million Euro’s and Dollar’s on The European Tour and PGA Tour respectively Henrik has truly found his feet on both sides of the Atlantic and will certainly look to challenge in the majors during 2009.

Henrik Stenson Tournament History

2008 The PGA Championship

7-10 August - PGA Championship - Oakland Hills. Padraig Harrington secured his 3rd Major Championship in 13 months at the 90th PGA Championship. With an incredible 8-under mark over the final 36 holes thanks to matching 4-under-par 66’s, Harrington posted a 3-under, 277, total for a 2 stroke victory ahead of Sergio Garcia and Ben Curtis. It was the Irishman's 2nd major win in just 3 weeks. Interestingly, it seemed as though Harrington was ready to throw in the towel after a 4-over 74 in the 2nd round put him at +5 for the tournament.

In Henrik Stenson's bag...Henrik started the final round in a tie for 2nd place Henrik finished with a 72 to secure a 4th place finish, his best in a major. Although he carries a heavily branded Srixon bag when playing on tour, Henrik has possibly one of the most mixed bags of club out of all the professionals on tour. He started with a Callaway FT-3 9.5˚driver and carried on the Callaway trend through to his #3 (Strong) Big Bertha fairway wood. He then jumped ship to Titleist as he used their PT 585.H hybrid (17˚) as his utility. Another new brand came into the bag through the Srixon I-701 irons (3-P). Henrik was back with Callaway to complete his bag, using X-Tour wedges (54˚ and 60˚) and a Odyssey #5 putter.

2007 World Golf Championship - CA Championship

22-25 March - WGC - CA Championship - Doral Golf Resort and Spa - Blue Monster Course. Tiger Woods bagged another $1.35m for his two-shot win over Ryder Cup team mate Brett Wetterich at the Blue Monster Course at the Doral Resort in Miami, Florida between 22nd-25th March 2007. No one ever got closer than three shots to Tiger on the final afternoon. The World Golf Championships are played over five continents – and feature the top 50 players from the Official World Golf Rankings along with top finishers on the money lists of six Tours comprising the International Federation of PGA Tours (PGA TOUR, European Tour, Australasian Tour, Japan Golf Tour, Asian Tour and Southern Africa Tour). The formats vary - match play, strokeplay and team - but the purses are always big! The WGC CA Championship is the fifth tournament Woods has won at least three times in a row.

In Henrik Stenson's bag...Stenson has moved from Callaway to Srixon since our last bag shots of him at the Amex at the Grove in 2006. Here we can see the top of his Srixon I-506 irons and the headcover of his Srixon W-506 driver. Old habits die hard, however, and at the bottom of the bag you can just see his trusty Callaway X-Tour wedge. This is the same set he used to win the Accenture Match Play in Atlanta, February 2007.

2006 World Golf Championship - American Express Championship

28 September-1 October - American Express WGC - The Grove. From the Ryder Cup matches at the K Club in Ireland, many of the world’s best players headed across the Irish Sea to The Grove in Hertfordshire for the UK leg of the World Golf Championships. With an incredible 23 under par total, Tiger Woods demolished the field to take an astonishing 12th win out of 22 WGC events. Tiger left runners-up Ian Poulter and Adam Scott a very distant eight shots behind. The formats vary - match play, strokeplay and team - but the purses are always big. On this occasion, Tiger walked away (or rather flew away in his private jet) with over 1 million Euros. Hardly worth turning up was it?!

In Henrik Stenson's bag...Stenson has now moved to Srixon, but in 2006 he was still a Callaway man - and here's a nice close-up of his Callaway X-18 Pro Series irons and Callaway Forged Vintage wedges. The headcover hides a Big Bertha Fusion FT-3 driver and bottom front of the bag can be seen the white face of his Odyssey White Hot #5 putter.
